Service
Options and Related Services Summary
- Consultation
Consultation services are provided to students who are receiving
instruction in the general curriculum. Special education teachers
work with the general education teachers to ensure that modifications
outlined in the student's IEP are implemented.
- Inclusion
Inclusion services are provided for students who are receiving
instruction in the general curriculum. Special education teachers
and/or educational assistants work in the regular education classroom alongside
the general education teacher in order to provide services outlined
in the child's IEP. Inclusion videos and an
Inclusion Training Manual are available for review through the
Special Education Department.
- Resource
Resource services are designed for moderately disabled children
in grades K-12. Students receive direct instruction from a special
education teacher in a setting outside the general curriculum
for subjects determined by their deficit areas. Students are instructed
at their appropriate grade level using age-appropriate materials.
Their curriculum consists of goals and objectives formulated in
the IEP meeting.
-
Least
Restrictive Environment
Least Restrictive Environment Classes are provided for students who require a
functional curriculum and whose needs are best met in a self-contained
setting.
- Vision Services
Vision
services are provided to students who are certified as visually
impaired according to the State Department of Education guidelines.
Visual disabilities range from total blindness to limited or partial
vision (legally blind). The student, after correction, may still
require adaptive methods, materials, and/or equipment. Services
are provided by vision specialists. Vision services are available
in all Jackson-Madison County Schools. Orientation
and Mobility services are also available.
- Speech and
Hearing Services
Speech therapy services are provided to students who meet the
State Department of Education guidelines for being speech impaired
or language delayed. Students who have speech articulation problems
and/or language development problems receive therapy with a licensed
speech/language therapist in individual or small group settings.
Services are provided at all Jackson-Madison County Schools.
- Homebound
Services
Homebound
services are provided to any student with a physical impairment
which, in the opinion of a licensed physician, will cause the
student to be absent from school for more than two (2) consecutive
weeks. An eligible special education student may be placed on
homebound instruction on a temporary basis when the IEP team has
determined that this is the appropriate interim service for that
student.
Homebound
services are provided for pregnant students in the six (6) weeks
after the delivery of the baby. A pregnant student cannot be placed
on homebound prior to the delivery of the baby unless the physician
documents specific complications with the pregnancy.
A Request for Homebound Services Form must be completed by the
physician and approved before services can begin. Forms are available
through the school or at Central Office by calling 664-2545.
Homebound
services are provided to a student in his/her home, convalescent
home, or hospital for a minimum of three (3) hours a week. There
must be an adult in the home when the homebound teacher makes
his/her visit.
- Occupational
and Physical Therapy Services
Physical and Occupational therapy is a related
service. These services support student access to the curriculum
and facilities in order to meet their educational need.
- GEMS -
Gifted Education in Madison County Schools*
The program for high academic achievers, whose needs go beyond
what the general education class can meet, is the GEMS Program.
This is a Special Education program and students must meet the
State of Tennessee criteria in order to be served.
-
Counseling Services
Qualified social workers, school psychologist, and/or guidance
counselors provide individual and group counseling to students.
-
Extended School Year
The term "extended school year" means educational programming
beyond the traditional 180 day school year for eligible students
with disabilities. The purpose of providing ESY services to
students with disabilities is to maintain identified skills to
prevent or avoid substantial loss of previously acquired or
emerging skills or behavior.
-
Social Skills Training
Social skills training is provided via IEP Team recommendation to
help a student learn new behaviors. In social skills training, the
teacher, counselor, or social worker discusses and models
appropriate behaviors, then gives the child a chance to practice.
The student is afforded to opportunity to see how his/her behavior
affects others and develops new ways to respond when angry or
pushed.
